In the original Shadow Hearts story, Yuri follows the directions of a mysterious voice that guides him into protecting people and defeating monsters that roam the world. The Shadow Hearts story begins when the voice guides Yuri to a train to protect a young girl, Alice Elliot from being kidnapped from Albert Simon.

Upon meeting Alice, Yuri's ability to Fusion with other creature besides his own elemental alignment is awakened. It is believed that Alice's spiritual powers unlocked new pathways for his powers to develop along. In the original Shadow Hearts, Yuri wears a long brown trenchcoat with a red shirt and brown leather pants. He wears a waist satchel tied around his waist with a series of intricately tied buckles. In the sequel titled Shadow Hearts: Covenant, he wears brown boots, black leather pants and jacket with a white cross stitched down the back, which is split down the middle.
Returning from the first Shadow Hearts, Yuri settles in the town of Domremy after burying Alice Elliot. He uses his Fusion form to scare invading soldiers away from the village, but runs into problems when Nicolas Conrad from the Vatican strikes him with the Holly Mistletoe, cursing him and diminishing his powers. He now travels with the party, hoping to regain his abilities and fight off the new evils infecting the world. His aloof and rude traits have been somewhat tempered by the loss of Alice, but are still there in many situations.
Yuri is one of the characters able to have up to five Hit Areas, alongside with Joachim and Kurando. Yuri has the highest Sanity Points in the party.
